According to a source close to the family who speaks with 247Sports, Florida State quarterback Tate Rodemaker, who assumed the team’s starting quarterback role following Jordan Travis’ season-ending injury, has told the Seminoles staff that he intends to use the transfer portal. When FSU plays Georgia in the Orange Bowl, Rodemaker will not be participating.

The decision comes with the Seminoles in pursuit of adding a transfer quarterback. FSU recently hosted Washington State transfer Cam Ward and Oregon State transfer DJ Uiagalelei for visits.

“This decision to enter the portal was extremely difficult,” 247Sports was informed by a family-close source. Nonetheless, the family believed that Tate would benefit more from this decision given the harsh calendar constraints on transfer portal players, bowl games, and transfer quarterback opportunities. Tate and his family reluctantly decided it was time to move on because Florida State had openly recruited several quarterbacks during this transfer cycle.”

Before being forced to miss the ACC championship game due to an injury, Rodemaker assisted the Seminoles in defeating Florida in their regular season finale.

Last year, Rodemaker threw two touchdown passes in leading FSU to a comeback victory over Louisville after stepping in for an injured Travis.

With Rodemaker not playing, Florida State is expected to lean on four-star freshman Brock Glenn against Georgia. In his one career start thus far, Glenn was 8 of 21 for 55 yards during FSU’s 16-6 win over Louisville in the ACC title game.

What is the NCAA transfer portal?

If players choose to pursue a transfer, they will enter their name into an online database called the portal. When players want to add their name to the portal, they notify the compliance office at their current school; usually, this happens within 48 hours. Coaches can get in touch with any player who has registered by accessing the database.

When will the transfer portal open?

In theory, users can access the portal whenever they want. But they will miss a season if they don’t do it within the designated “windows” of their sport. There are two windows for college football: one after spring practice and one after the regular season. One day following the conference championship games, on December 3, the fall portal window opens. It will stay open for thirty days before closing that same day on January 2, 2024. After their last game, players who participate in a postseason event (such as a bowl game or the CFB Playoff) will have an extra five days to transfer.

Prior to this school year, players had 45 days to enter their name in the portal following the end of the regular season. The NCAA amended that rule this fall, cutting down the window to 30 days.

Is a player forced to leave his school after entering the portal?

No. Actually, players occasionally decide to stick with their respective programs and remove their names from the portal.

But more often than not, the choice to open the portal is accompanied by some degree of resentment on the part of the player or the program. The majority of players who use the portal don’t go back to their old school, and they’re frequently kicked off the team right away.
