At the Moda Center on Friday night, the San Antonio Spurs will host the Portland Trail Blazers for the second of their two consecutive meetings.

San Antonio defeated Portland 118-105 last night to end a run of defeats. However, things might be different tonight as Gregg Popovich stated earlier this week that Victor Wembanyama, the first overall pick, wouldn’t play in both games on consecutive nights.

Wembanyama stated, “I’ve made it clear that I’m going to trust them if they want me to sit out, but only in extreme cases.”

Following their 130-113 victory over the Sacramento Kings, the Portland Trail Blazers will be without starting center Deandre Ayton (knee tendonitis) and guard Shaedon Sharpe (hip) on Thursday night when they play the San Antonio Spurs.

The Blazers will surely miss both players, but on Tuesday night, backup center Duop Reath scored a career-high 25 points, demonstrating the effectiveness of their bench unit. In the victory, the Blazers’ bench scored 65 points.

The Spurs, with rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama at center, might present a special challenge for the Blazers. The team would miss Ayton especially if Reath or Moses Brown struggled or got into foul trouble. However, Wembanyama has already stated that he won’t play in both of the Spurs’ back-to-back games, according to coach Gregg Popovich. Whether the 19-year-old Frenchman will play in the first or second game is still up in the air.

Wemby isn’t fully recovered after stepping on a ball boy’s foot late last week.

The Blazers will still rely on Anfernee Simons, who is a sharpshooter. Over the past six games for the Blazers, Ant has averaged over 29 points, demonstrating his recent hot streak.
