Instant Recap: Gators secure undefeated December with 97-72 win over Quinnipiac

The Florida Gators remain active in the NCAA Transfer Portal for names in the secondary. Florida already holds a commitment from one transfer safety, but are recruiting more. They are also recruiting some names at cornerback as well, making it a busy time for new secondary coach Will Harris since accepting the job in Gainesville in December head of the Early Signing Period.

Harris is staying busy though, as the Gators have another official visitor schedule for when the ‘Contact Period’ opens again. The latest name Swamp247 has learned that is expected in town on January 5 is former UTSA cornerback Kam Alexander.

Alexander entered the portal on December 28th. He finished the 2023 season with 34 tackles and two interceptions. He was named to the AAC all-conference first team, and was name the MVP of the Frisco Bowl. He’s claimed an offer from Washington so far over social media. Swamp247 has been told he also has an offer from the Gators as well.

Following a pair of losses in late November, the Gators regrouped and expressed a clear-cut goal for the month ahead: an undefeated December leading up to the start of SEC play on Jan. 6 against Kentucky.

For just the second time within the previous decade, the Gators did just that, winning its sixth-consecutive contest to close out an unblemished final month in 2023 by downing Quinnipiac, , Saturday at the Exactech Arena.

By downing the Bobcats, the Gators secured an undefeated month of competition for the first time since UF captured six wins in a row in November of the 2021-22 season, the program’s final season under former head coach Mike White.

Zyon Pullin, who started once again in place of shooting guard Riley Kugel, provided 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while junior guard Will Richard continued to provide efficient scoring for the Gators, particularly from beyond the arc.

En route to a game-high 22 points, Richard connected on five of his nine three-point attempts to finish the month of December with a 18-of-41 mark (43.9 percent) on long-range attempts. Richard tied his career high with his fifth make from outside with nearly 16 minutes remaining in the second half, a conversion which maintained UF’s sizable advantage despite Quinnipiac’s continued efforts at remaining in a contest that saw Florida pull away as the first half drew to a close.

After opening the scoring on a three-pointer by Matt Balanc, the Bobcats continued to hang around in the early going, and Richie Springs’ three-ball midway through the first half made it a two-possession game. Rather than allow Quinnipiac to keep the contest within reach, the Gators started to pull away as halftime neared. Florida closed the half on an 11-1 run over the final 2:33 of the opening 20 minutes to take a 52-29 lead into the break, effectively eliminating the Bobcats’ hopes of pulling out an unlikely upset on the road.

In his return to action after a one-game absence due to a foot bruise, sophomore guard Riley Kugel provided 10 points in 21 minutes as a reserve. Although he wasn’t the focal point of the team’s offensive attack, Kugel continued to make the extra pass and rebound at an impressive level at the shooting guard spot, resulting in four boards and an assist against the Bobcats.
