LAS VEGAS (AP) – According to a prosecutor, separate cases pertaining to murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy will be merged so that a former NBA developmental league player and his ex-girlfriend can face charges in connection with the death of a woman whose body was discovered in southern Nevada last month.

Prior to his arrest in Sacramento, California on December 15, Chance Comanche, a 27-year-old native of Los Angeles who was a player for the Stockton Kings, appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday. He said, “Yes, ma’am,” when asked by a judge if he understood the charges against him while he was still in shackles.

Gary Guymon, Comanche’s defense lawyer, refrained from requesting bail right away and remained silent after the brief court appearance. However, he stated that Comanche plans to enter a not guilty plea in upcoming hearings.

Sakari Harnden, 19, Comanche’s ex-girlfriend, is likewise incarcerated in Las Vegas pending a separate hearing on a theft charge connected to the disappearance and demise of Marayna Rodgers, 23, of Lynnwood, Washington, on Wednesday.

Kennedy Holthus, the prosecutor, informed Judge Diana Sullivan on Tuesday that Steve Wolfson, the district attorney for Clark County, plans to consolidate all of the cases against Comanche and Harnden. Sullivan fixed Comanche’s next court date for February 8 and stated that he will remain incarcerated without access to bail.

Rodgers was a medical assistant. According to Las Vegas police, she was strangled early on December 6 and her body was later discovered in a roadside ditch in the suburban Henderson area.

On Tuesday, Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Candlestick Chronicles Podcast spoke with Stiles & Watkins about a variety of topics, including the Kings’ recent road trip, the 49ers’ NFC title, and more.

Sacramento went 2-1 in their short road trip, losing first to the Portland Trail Blazers before bouncing back and defeating the Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies. During that time though, a name often heard in trade rumors with Sacramento, OG Anunoby, was sent from Toronto to the New York Knicks in exchange for RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and a second-round pick.

Biderman thinks Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri would have requested Keegan Murray and Malik Monk if the Sacramento Kings had made the trade. So, is a significant upgrade planned for Sacramento? Even though Biderman doesn’t think so, the team still plans to move.

It was a steep price, and in a way, that represents the dilemma the Kings were facing heading into the trade deadline—namely, how much are they willing to give up in exchange for an upgrade? Because, in my opinion, it wouldn’t really benefit another team, such as Toronto, if they were considering trading for Kevin Huerter and Harrison Barnes with the Kings in exchange for Pascal Siakam, Biderman said. “I don’t think the Kings have too many extremely alluring assets, maybe aside from Keegan and possibly Malik Monk, and I don’t think the Kings have much of an appetite to deal either one of those guys,” the player said. “Maybe outside of a bunch of draft picks.”
