Mark McCall, the manager of Saracens, believes that Owen Farrell’s decision to leave Test rugby in order to focus on his and his family’s mental health should serve as a wake-up call for the sport.

After being the target of internet trolls, England captain Farrell shocked everyone on Wednesday by declaring he would not be participating in the Six Nations the following year.

Additionally, the 32-year-old’s club manager criticized the way a player he has been working with for 15 years was treated yesterday.

It is deplorable. About the criticism Farrell has gotten, McCall stated. “Rugby probably needs to take action.” This serves as a wake-up call for everyone involved.

Rugby is seeing an increase in the concerning issue of online abuse. Following his dismissal during an England World Cup warm-up match against Wales this summer, Farrell became a target. He eventually received a ban and was not present for the tournament’s opening.

Some England fans loudly jeered the No 10 when he played in France.

After officiating the match between South Africa and New Zealand, Englishman Wayne Barnes announced his retirement, citing the effect trolls had on him and his family.

Director of rugby at Saracens McCall stated, “There’s no way a referee should face what Wayne faced and there’s no way a player or a person like Owen should have to face what he’s faced over a longer period of time.” I’ve spent the last fifteen years working with Owen every day. He is a devoted family man. They’ve always taken precedence.

In addition, he is a smart, kind, and encouraging teammate as well as a devoted friend to many. He is an excellent, kind person. That’s who I am familiar with. The most crucial thing is his family’s and his own happiness. As always, the club will support him wholeheartedly.

Farrell is taking a break from his England duties, but he still plans to play for Saracens.

McCall will decide today whether to play tomorrow against Northampton with Farrell, who is dealing with a knee injury.

McCall stated, “There’s only so much someone can take.” Considering how he was feeling, it’s amazing how well he performed during the World Cup. Even though he and his family are currently at the top of their game, they have been made to feel this way.
