Michigan Sets To Over Thrown Washington Huskies For The 2024 CFP National Championship….

2024 CFP National Championship game odds, picks: Michigan vs. Washington predictions, bets from proven model - CBSSports.com

The two greatest college football teams will square off in the national championship game. We have to predict the 2024 CFP national championship before the Washington Huskies and Michigan Wolverines take the field.

It makes sense that the two greatest teams in the nation will square off in the season’s final game. This season, Michigan and Washington were mostly healthy, which helped them go undefeated and win conference titles. The national championship game remains after defeating Texas and Alabama in the CFP Semifinal.

CFP National Championship predictions: Washinton vs Michigan

Washington Huskies QB Michael Penix Jr hits 300+ pass yards, 3 TDs

The Michigan Wolverines have the best defense in college football and it’s the biggest reason they beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl. Michigan overwhelmed the Crimson Tide’s offensive line in that matchup, recording 8 QB hurries, 4 sacks and a 34.3 percent pressure rate, per Pro Football Focus.

The Wolverines defeat Washington if they can duplicate that pass-rushing performance. Not only is Washington’s offensive line among the best in the country, but quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s ability to handle pressure is the real issue for Michigan.

Against Texas, Washington’s offensive line was excellent; they limited the Longhorns’ pass rush to 10 hurries on 40 dropbacks without allowing a single sack or quarterback hit. Penix Jr. completed 60% of his passes with 151 passing yards and a 90.3 PFF grade when Texas pressed him.

The Michigan defensive line puts itself in danger of the Huskies’ quarterback making even bigger plays if it is unable to get home to Penix without blitzing. The Wolverines also need to be aware that a quarterback with a 9-2 TD-INT line, a 45.3 percent completion rate, and an 88.5 PFF grade on throws that are 20 yards or more downfield can attack Michigan deep when he has time to throw. Michigan’s offense against Alabama was far inferior to that of Washington, and we think the Wolverines will have trouble against Penix and wide receivers Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk.

Michigan Wolverines star Blake Corum scores twice, eclipses 150 scrimmage yards

For as effective as we believe Penix Jr. will be through the air for Washington, Michigan running back Blake Corum should match some of that playmaking on Monday night. While Corum wasn’t incredibly efficient with his carries in the Rose Bowl (4.4 yards per carry) he scored 2 touchdowns and nearly hit 120 scrimmage yards against one of the SEC’s best run defenses in 2023.

The run defense of Washington is not nearly as good. The Longhorns’ main ball carriers, CJ Baxter and Jaydon Blue, averaged a combined 6.8 yards per carry and each scored rushing touchdowns against Texas, which started backup running backs. With just 28 attempts, Quinn Ewers (54 rushing yards) helped Texas rush for 180 yards and three touchdowns. He was just as effective with his legs. 84 receiving yards were added on by Blue and Baxter.

Michigan has a better run-blocking offensive line than Texas did and Corum is a better running back than any of the Longhorns’ healthy backs. The Wolverines will want to keep Penix Jr. off the field as much as possible, with Corum both providing that and the ability to exploit Washington’s weakness.

Michigan, Washington blow past the point total

The Wolverines have, as mentioned earlier, had the best defense in college football this entire season. Michigan limited Penn State, Ohio State, and Alabama to a combined total of 59 points. Granted, Washington’s offense is unlike anything Michigan has ever faced, and it is more akin to the 2019 LSU Tigers offense.

Michigan’s offense, on the other hand, has all it needs to take advantage of holes in the Wolverines’ offensive line. Donovan Edwards and Corum have a great chance to have one of the season’s best games together. Play-action passes are set up once the run game gets going, and in the regular season, J.J. McCarthy averaged 10.9 yards per attempt while posting a 76 percent completion rate and a 6-1 TD-INT line.

Washington Huskies win the CFP National Championship Game

We have never been more anticipatory of a national championship game than we are right now. The game between Georiga and TCU was begging to be a blowout, but this one is ideal. While the Wolverines’ strengths are primed to take advantage of the Huskies’ weaknesses, Washington’s strengths can attack Michigan’s weaknesses.

We do give Michigan the coaching advantage in this match, and Michigan will also benefit from the undoubtedly large number of Wolverines supporters at NRG Stadium. To project a winner, though, we frequently wager on quarterback performance in addition to trench-winning ability.

In the end, we anticipate that each team will trade touchdowns and the game will be tied going into the fourth quarter. Penix Jr. leads a winning drive in the final minutes to set up a field goal that is successful from more than forty yards out. McCarthy and Corum have one final chance to win it, but the Wolverines lose and Washington prevails.
