Michigan football D-line coach Greg Scruggs has resigned
In a disappointing turn over events, Michigan football defensive line coach, Greg Scruggs, has resigned his position than less than two weeks after it was officially announced.
Scruggs, who was hired away from Wisconsin by Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore, was arrested on Saturday morning for operating a motor vehicle while impaired. The Michigan Insider filed a FOIA request and obtained more details of the arrest, which weren’t favorable to Scruggs.
The NFL veteran, who also spent time with the New York Jets, had a blood-alcohol level of nearly twice the legal limit. He was also pulled over after a police officer observed his vehicle stopped at an intersection with its hazard lights on and not moving for over two minutes.
Soon after, Moore announced that Scruggs had resigned from the team. He said he wouldn’t be able to make any other comments moving forward.
Regardless, Michigan football needs to move on and quickly to find a new defensive line coach. It’s incredibly disappointing that Scruggs put other people in danger in order to drive while impaired. He clearly needs some help and stepping away from football was the right thing to do.
It doesn’t change the fact that Michigan football started spring practice earlier this week. With the spring transfer portal window looming, more coaching staff upheaval is the last thing that the Wolverines needed.
Moore was able to rebound quickly when Mike Hart left and you hope he’s able to make another quality hire to replace Scruggs, who seemed to be doing well on the recruiting trail. It is what it is for Michigan football and all the Wolverines can do is move forward.

Michigan football defensive line coach Greg Scruggs has resigned from the Wolverines program, according to a statement from head coach Sherrone Moore. Scruggs was arrested on March 16 for driving while intoxicated in Ann Arbor. “I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately,” Moore said. ‘I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.” Police stopped Scruggs around 2:15 a.m. that morning at an intersection with his hazard lights on. He went through a field sobriety test and later had two breath tests, registering a blood-alcohol level of .16 and .17.
Moore confirmed Scruggs’ arrest a few hours after the news became public, noting that the 33-year-old assistant had made an unfortunate mistake. Scruggs was also arrested when he was a senior on the Louisville football team in 2011 when he left the roadway driving and ran over a light pole, per reports. He was dismissed from the team prior to its bowl game against NC State. Prior to joining Michigan, Scruggs coached at Wisconsin over the 2023 season and was with the New York Jets the year before. Now, Michigan turns to the coaching carousel to find a replacement for its defensive line coach.

Sherrone Moore, Head Coach of Michigan recently said: “I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately. I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.”
Scruggs was recently hired by Michigan as the defensive line coach. He was on staff for the Wisconsin Badgers in 2023 and worked as the defensive line coach for the New York Jets prior to that.
Scruggs, 33, was hired by recently hired by head coach Sherrone Moore’s staff on March 6. 10 days later he was arrested for an OWI.
The Michigan football program announced Moore’s suspension of Scruggs following the news of his arrest and said it would investigate the situation further.
“Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated,” Moore said in a statement obtained by the Free Press. “He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions. The football program and athletic department have suspended Greg indefinitely while we review details of the incident.”
Scruggs held the position of Michigan defensive line coach for a total of 16 total days.
No word on whether or not the investigation led to his resignation. No further details have been released at this time.
