Braves News: Jarred Kelenic’s improvement, Ohtani gambling scandal, more

Jarred Kelenic may be turning the corner with the adjustments he’s made this spring for Atlanta. Elsewhere in the league, a gambling scandal is brewing around the sport’s biggest star, Shohei Ohtani, and turmoil continues in the MLBPA.

Kelenic looked good on Wednesday after a really rough start to spring. With two hits and another solid plate appearance, the offseason trade acquisition may finally be seeing the fruits of his adjustments. Our former writer Gaurav Vedak has a nice side-by-side video to illustrate Kelenic’s mechanical adjustments. Many had been growing concerned about Kelenic’s lack of spring performance, and the noise increased as Adam Duvall was brought in to platoon with Kelenic after the team had initially said Kelenic would play every day. It has been an extremely small sample, however, and it only makes sense that a player making big adjustments would take some time to produce. Hopefully today’s strong showing can be a turning point for Jarred as we are in the home stretch towards Opening Day.

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman has a really good piece on the hitting adjustments that Jarred Kelenic has been working on this spring, including quotes from Braves’ hitting coach Kevin Seitzer.

Ronald Acuna also started showing out at the plate, along with some promising plate appearances from Kelenic in a high scoring spring training win.

NORTH PORT, Fla. — Arjun Nimmala belted his first homer with the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-9 spring-training loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Toronto selected Nimmala, an 18-year-old shortstop, in the first round of the ’23 draft.

Nimmala walked in his first plate appearance before homering in a three-run ninth inning as Toronto (11-13) tied the game 9-9. But Leury Garcia’s single brought home E.J. Exposito with the winning run for Atlanta (10-13) in its half of the ninth.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Daniel Vogelbach and Rafael Lantigua also homered for Toronto. Jays right-hander Wes Parsons (0-1) took the loss.

It is clear that Major League Baseball is trying their damnedest to find creative ways to bring the game of baseball to a wider audience. The Atlanta Braves were a part of one of the most famous examples of this when they took part in the game played at Fort Bragg back in 2016. Even now, the Dodgers and Padres are currently playing the first series of the 2024 season over in South Korea.

However, it appears as though MLB could be set to expand into yet another market and once again, the Braves could be taking part. According to a recent report from Fox Sports’ Chris Myers, it sounds like Bristol Motor Speedway is going to play host to a big league game and the rumor currently is that the matchup could end up being the Braves versus the Rangers.

We are extremely light on details here and the Braves’ involvement is only a rumor at this point. It is worth mentioning that when the Fort Bragg Game was announced in 2016, it was announced in March 2016 so if this game were to be played during the 2024 season, we could get an announcement soon.

However, the timing doesn’t really work out for a Braves-Rangers matchup at Bristol in 2024. Presumably, the game would replace a Braves home game if it were to happen. Given the Braves’ proximity to Bristol and the number of their fans in the area, that makes a lot of sense to do. Atlanta does host the Rangers this season, but the series takes place April 19-21. It stands to reason that we would have already known that there was a Braves game being played at a race track a month from now.

If the rumors are true about the Braves’ involvement, though, then that leaves either an exhibition game OR a 2025 regular season game as options. We’ll see how it all shakes out and if we will see Jarred Kelenic may be turning the corner with the adjustments he’s made this spring for Atlanta. Elsewhere in the league, a gambling scandal is brewing around the sport’s biggest star, Shohei Ohtani, and turmoil continues in the MLBPA. park a baseball or two on to turn three at Bristol in the not too distant future.
