Could a star Michigan cornerback add a new dimension for the defending national champions as a kick and punt returner?

Will Johnson — a popular pick for All-American honors heading into his junior season — is working as a return man in preparation for his team’s title defense, which begins Aug. 31 against Fresno State.

Michigan wideout Semaj Morgan, via the Winged Helmet, said that in addition to himself and Johnson, sophomore defensive back Zeke Berry and sophomore wide receiver Frederick Moore are practicing returns for Michigan. The Wolverines’ 2024 spring game is on April 20.

“Don’t kick to us,” Morgan warned.

The Michigan football team won the national title a few months ago, and the Wolverines were loaded with NFL talent. Michigan broke the record for most invites to the NFL Combine, and they might break the record for most players drafted when the NFL Draft takes place in a couple weeks. Jim Harbaugh was the head coach when the Wolverines won it all, but he is now the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. A lot of people are expecting him to draft a lot of his former players, and Roman Wilson is one of those people.

Roman Wilson had a big year for the Michigan football team last season as he hauled in 48 receptions for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns. Wilson knows that he and a lot of his teammates are going to be drafted, and he wouldn’t be surprised if Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers take a lot of them.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if like all nine of us end up going [to the Chargers],” Wilson said, according to an article from Fox Sports. “But seriously, like at least five or six. I think he’s going to take a lot of us.”

There are a lot of people that are expecting Harbaugh to load up on Michigan players. He built a special culture in Ann Arbor and all of those players would obviously fit right into the mold with the Chargers. Wilson would not be opposed to reuniting with his head coach in Los Angeles.

“I’d love to go out there and play, especially at pick 37,” Wilson said. “I wouldn’t be upset with that. I’d get to reunite with my coach and maybe some of my former teammates. I’d absolutely love that.”

When Harbaugh took the Chargers job, he mentioned that he was going to turn it into “Michigan West.” He has already brought a lot of his coaches with him, and he is likely going to be draft at least some of his former players as well. He’s no longer in Ann Arbor, but he is still a Michigan man.

With the recruiting dead period in the books, this will be the first big visit weekend of Dusty May’s tenure as Michigan’s head coach. The Wolverines are set to host several key players on campus while other recruitments continue to heat up for May and his staff.

We won’t cover every recruitment in this edition of Trending Targets, but here’s the latest on five developing recruitments — Justin Pippen, Vlad Goldin, Danny Wolf, Tre Donaldson and Joshua Jefferson — that are heating up for Michigan.

The Los Angeles Chargers are beginning a new era with new head coach Jim Harbaugh, who returns to the NFL ranks a champion. His Michigan Wolverines went a perfect 15-0 in 2023 and blew out the Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

Harbaugh put together quite a roster at Michigan, and he will have to do the same in L.A. That could include selecting a couple of his former players in the 2024 NFL Draft. During an appearance on the “NFL on FOX Podcast,” former Michigan wideout Roman Wilson revealed he’s expecting Harbaugh to draft many Michigan prospects.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if like all nine of us end up going [to the Chargers],” Wilson said, referring to the team’s nine draft picks, per Fox Sports. “But seriously, like at least five or six. I think he’s going to take a lot of us.”

In his seven-round mock draft, CBS Sports NFL Draft expert Chris Trapasso has a total of 13 Michigan players being selected, while other seven-round mocks have as many as 17 former Wolverines being drafted. Trapasso does have Harbaugh selecting two of his former players: Linebacker Junior Colson in the third round, and running back Blake Corum in the fifth round.

A total of 18 Michigan players were invited to the combine earlier this offseason, which set a record. The university has a chance to beat the record Georgia set in 2022, when the Bulldogs had a total of 15 players selected in the draft
