Catching up with former Gonzaga Bulldog Rasir Bolton – His pro career, thoughts on GU and being back in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — There was a familiar face back in Spokane this weekend: former Gonzaga Bulldog Rasir Bolton.

Bolton visited the Lilac City and was at Hoopfest on Sunday as he and current Zag Ben Gregg were presented with the “Big Heart Award” from Giving Back Spokane for their community service, which included raising money to help feed, house, and clothe children and families in and around Spokane who are struggling with poverty and homelessness. Giving back to the community that took him in during his time at Gonzaga is very important to Bolton, and he was excited to receive this award.

“It means a lot. I think it shows that, one, I’m more than a basketball player; you know, I’m a real person in the real world who wants to make a difference,” Bolton said. “It means a lot for my mom to be able to see me do something other than basketball and be out there and get that award. It was really nice.”

Bolton played for the Zags for two full seasons, starting in all 69 games, and amassed a total of 731 points, 167 assists, 148 rebounds, and a 47% field goal percentage.

Most recently, Bolton helped lead Gonzaga to the Elite Eight in 2022–23, where GU fell to UConn.

For Bolton, it’s always special when he can come back to Spokane.

“It feels good; it’s always good to be back. You know, the city of Spokane shows me a lot of love. Just seeing this community and being a part of it, it’s always great to come back and see it,” Bolton said. “It’s always great to have a home, have a place you can call home. I can come here, get in the gym, talk to our coaches, talk to old players I used to play with, and really just see guys in the community I was a part of. I played two years here and had a great time being a part of it.”

The current Gonzaga Bulldogs are projected to be a top-five team coming into the 2024–25 season by several outlets, as every player except Anton Watson is returning from last year’s Sweet 16 squad. Bolton is also on the Zags hype train and says he sees a big year coming for Mark Few and the Bulldogs.

“I’m really confident about them this year,” Bolton said. “They’ve got the same team coming back, same core; they’re older, they’ve already played a year together, kind of gone through the gauntlet, gone through the fire, seeing what they need to do, know what adjustments to make. I’m confident; I think they’re gonna make a really deep run in the tournament this year.”

As for Bolton’s career after Gonzaga, he’s been playing overseas since his college career ended. Most recently, Bolton played for the Telenet Giants Antwerp of the BNXT League in Belgium, where he was awarded first-team All-League honors after averaging 17.6 points per game and shooting nearly 50% from the field in 29 games during the regular season.

“My journey is going good. I just finished this past season in Belgium. I had a decent year, finished first-team All-League, and then I’ll be going to play in Serbia next season in August. So, looking forward to that, playing in the ABA League and trying to do the best I can there,” Bolton said.

Bolton will be playing for KK Spartak Subotica in Serbia at the end of this summer.
