Former Collingwood player Shannon John Cox charged over fatal crash in WA

A former AFL player has been charged over a crash that left two elderly women dead in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt.

Police have alleged ex-Collingwood player Shannon John Cox, 38, was driving a Toyota Prado on Brand Highway in Cooljarloo on Friday morning when a collision occurred between his vehicle, a road train, and a Suzuki hatchback.

Two women in their 80s who were in the Suzuki died at the scene and a 12-year-old girl was treated for minor injuries.

On Saturday Cox was charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

He appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday afternoon and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on June 18.

Cox played 25 games for Collingwood between 2007 and 2009, including two finals.

He resides in the Geraldton suburb of Spalding.

The crash followed a separate fatal accident on the same highway the previous day that killed a cyclist in South Greenough.
