Fernando Alonso had tears in his eyes while discussing the back pain which blighted his Brazilian Grand Prix.

 

The 43-year-old nursed a bouncing Aston Martin home in 14th place and out of the points, rounding off a nightmare weekend for the team in fitting fashion.

 

Alonso and his Aston team-mate, Lance Stroll, both crashed in qualifying to bring out two of five red flags across three chaotic sessions. After mechanics worked their fingers to the bone getting both cars ready for Sunday’s race, Stroll went spinning into the barriers during the formation lap.

 

Alonso fought his way through all 69 laps of the race but the agony in his voice was audible when he said over the team radio: “I will finish the race for the mechanics. They did a very good job today. But my back is hurting, man. This bouncing is not normal.”

 

The two-time world champion required a trip to the medical centre after the race. And a bleary-eyed interview told the whole story about his uncomfortable afternoon.

 

“Some back pain and a lot of bouncing today in the second half of the race,” he told Sky Sports. “I think Lance had a brake problem on the formation lap, I had the same problem in some of the restarts as well.

 

“All in all, it was a tough race and now we have two weeks to regroup and get better for [Las] Vegas.”
