Co-host and play-by-play announcer for the Chargers, Matt “Money” Smith, discussed the possibility that Staley was fired prior to the game in Las Vegas on a recent episode of the Bleav in Chargers podcast.
“I speculated that following the Denver game, the coach might have lost his job. There was just no vigor or energy in their play against the Broncos, as we discussed during the game broadcast. Additionally, Smith believes that some of the calls made during that game were highly dubious. It seems to have started to slip. You can sense these things and you could feel it when you spend as much time as we do with a team and have been doing this for as long as we have.
For some time, management had doubts about Brandon Staley’s future, and the team’s lopsided defeat of 63-21 was the final straw that forced them to fire the third-year coach in the middle of the season. One name that has already been mentioned as a potential head coach in Los Angeles for next season is Bill Belichick. Belichick is currently working for the Patriots, so it’s possible he’s leaving New England. During his dominating run, the eight-time Super Bowl winner has also served as a de facto general, making him an intriguing option.

The LA Chargers had not fired a head coach during a season in 25 years, and it required a 5-9 start and letting the Las Vegas Raiders score 63 points with a backup quarterback. Last Friday, general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Brandon Staley were let go.
Chargers fans have moved on. Fans were asking for a head coaching change for months, stemming back to the team’s blown 27-0 lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoffs last season. The Chargers are in a new era and fans are rightfully focused on the future.
However, Staley and Telesco’s job search has begun. Both of them will probably hunt for work in order to continue playing football, even though they will still be paid what they were due for the balance of their contracts. Staley will have to accept a relegation to another coaching staff, and Telesco will have to accept a smaller front office role elsewhere.
It may seem impossible for Staley to get another chance as a defensive coordinator after witnessing how awful the Chargers’ defense has been at times over the past three seasons. But now that the cards are falling in Staley’s favor, his next NFL role appears painfully clear.
