The Detroit Lions played with a renewed sense of purpose following their decisive loss at Soldier Field to the Chicago Bears.
December is when Detroit’s coaching staff expected the team to play its best football because a number of young players have accumulated a ton of experience during the regular season.
After a strong practice week, the team felt pressure to perform well to win a crucial game against the Denver Broncos in primetime when they returned home.
This week, as the team looks to defeat the Minnesota Vikings on the road to secure the division title, Jared Goff was questioned about the message.
“Still urgent, still understanding what our goal is, what our mission is and not much has changed,” said Goff. “I think last week — it’s not the worst thing in the world to sometimes get your ass kicked a little bit like we did in Chicago. So, it created that and it continues on.”
The veteran signal-caller does not shoulder the burden of the organization’s abysmal past, noting he still understands the importance of securing the NFC North and what it means to the fanbase.
“Yes, thinking back on it would make it even more memorable,” Goff remarked. “I believe that if we succeed, it would mean exactly what it says—that is, winning the division and nothing more. Once more, we need to go play well and find a way to accomplish that this week.
“But I don’t think we’re by any means considering the magnitude of what it, how long it’s been or that stuff,” Goff continued. “We’re attempting to find a way to win games on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday by doing our best.”
