Miami Marlins Hire Former San Francisco Giants Manager Gabe Kapler as Assistant GM - Fastball

Longtime manager Gabe Kapler was hired as the assistant general manager of the Miami Marlins, just over a month after he was fired by the San Francisco Giants.

Just over a month after he was fired as the manager of the SF Giants, Gabe Kapler has another prominent job in professional baseball. The Miami Marlins have hired Kapler as assistant general manager to president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, who was hired earlier this offseason. The news was first reported by Craig Mish of The Miami Herald.

In four seasons with the Giants, Kapler finished with a 295-248 record, although the team only finished with more wins than losses in one of his four seasons. Kapler, of course, was at the helm during a 107-win campaign in 2021, but also oversaw some late-season collapses in 2020 and 2023 that led San Francisco to squander a pair of opportunities to reach the postseason.

Kapler was hired by the Giants shortly after he was let go by the Philadelphia Phillies following the 2019 season to replace Bruce Bochy. Kapler had managed the Phillies from 2018-2019, finishing with a 161-163 record. However, he was fired after failing to reach the playoffs in either season.

Prior to managing, Kapler had worked in an MLB front office before. He worked as the director of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2014-2017, a period that produced a plentiful collection of future impact MLB players, including Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, and Joc Pederson.

While the Dodgers consistently had one of the best farm systems in the league during Kapler’s tenure, there were also multiple controversies. According to separate investigations by The Daily Beast and The Washington Post, there were multiple incidents where the Dodgers were informed of incidents of sexual violence perpetrated by players that were not reported to police. Following the reports, Kapler publicly apologized for his role.

“I don’t think that I did enough, and we’ve talked about some of the ways that I could have been better in those situations,” Kapler said back in 2019. “I have a lot of remorse for that. I wish I would have been more informed, I wish I would have gotten more informed, and I take responsibility for not taking those steps.”

It’s perhaps worth noting that there have been no subsequent incidents tied to Kapler since he left the Dodgers organization, while Los Angeles has continued to face scrutiny for how they have handled players accused of sexual and physical violence against women. However, he has also not worked in a front office role since.

Miami finished the 2023 season 84-78, but ownership informed incumbent general manager Kim Ng, the first woman to become a MLB team’s head of baseball operations, that they intended to hire a president of baseball operations (effectively demoting her). Rather than remaining, Ng decided to leave the organization. Now Gabe Kapler will look to help Bendix build the Marlins into a perennial contender in spite of one of the cheapest ownership groups in the league.
