Prior to Michael Maguire taking over as head coach, Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy disclosed that he declined the chance to lead the NSW Blues.

Speaking to News Corp, the legendary coach disclosed that he spoke with officials from NSW about the vacant coaching job but ended up turning down the chance to take over from Brad Fittler.

Before the appointment of Maguire, reports emerged at one point that Bellamy was the favourite to take the NSW Blues coaching job. However, it has now been confirmed that the three-time premiership winner is shifting all his focus to the Melbourne Storm.

Bellamy has backed Michael Maguire to turn around the state’s results against Queensland and Billy Slater, a former player he coached, even though he isn’t taking over as coach.

Bellamy and Maguire were coworkers at the Storm for a number of years, and Bellamy’s playing days at the Storm are shared by new Blues assistant coaches Matt King and Brett White.

“I had a few conversations with them,” Bellamy stated through News Corp.

That was really all I wanted to focus on this year—I just wanted to focus on my work. It’s an extremely privileged role. Madge will do a fantastic job, I’m sure.

The fact that every one of his coaches—aside from John Cartwright—has been here is intriguing. Thus, the NSW side has a hint of purple this year.

“Carty’s presence is appreciated; he is a knowledgeable individual. Whitey and Kingy, who I know very well, are both excellent coaches and nice guys.

“There are some amazing people with him.” How he handles Billy (Slater) and the boys will be interesting to watch.
