Rugby Back In Deal as They welcome $900 Million Long Anticipated Key Star Player To Team…

St Helens star Jack Welsby makes key contract admission - Rugby League News

In response to the NRL’s keen interest, St Helens has secured prize asset Jack Welsby with a new, long-term contract. The England player has committed to the team through the end of the 2027 season by signing a new contract.

At the age of 22, Welsby has become one of the greatest players on the planet after winning the Super League three times. In addition to helping St Helens win two League Leaders’ Shields and the Challenge Cup, he was a key player in their historic World Club Challenge victory over Penrith Panthers.

A three-time Dream Team inductee, Welsby has played 117 games for St Helens and already established himself in the England side, captaining his country in the absence of George Williams for the first two tests against Tonga in the Autumn.

In the midst of all of that, several NRL teams—most notably the St George Illawarra Dragons—had made moves to try and acquire Welsby. But with a new contract that will make him St Helens’ homegrown marquee player, he has now put any rumors about his future to rest. He will therefore only cost £50,000 under their salary cap.

Welsby remarked, “I am so happy that it is over with now so I can focus on pre-season and the New Year.” “I’m happy I made the choice I did, and I get to spend time with all of my best friends and at a great club. It was a decision I had to make.

“Everyone at St Helens expects to win trophies, whether it’s the fans, the players, the coaches, or the backroom staff. Everyone’s expecting for you to go out and win at a weekend and then win on the big night at Old Trafford. That sort of expectation, it’s hard sometimes, but it’s what I want, I want that pressure and that’s where I feel like I play my best rugby.”

While Welsby has spoken openly about his ambitions to play in the NRL, he believes Super League can challenge the competition and become the sport’s flagship league.

“The NRL’s a massive competition and everyone sees it as that, but I believe that Super League can be that and we’ve just got to work towards it. Sometimes the speculation that comes with the NRL and stuff is not just as simple as going to sign at a different club, it’s a lot of things. It’s on the other side of the world, it’s tough and the timing’s got to be right – it’s got to be perfect. But for me, it was always going to be St Helens.”

Eamonn McManus, chairman of St Helens, continued, “This is the ideal Christmas gift for all Saints’ supporters.” It’s difficult to believe that Jack, who is only 22 years old, has accomplished so much already. He is a generational talent. Making a long-term commitment to St. Helens will greatly benefit us both now and in the future. Jack has the potential to go down as one of the team’s all-time greats, and we are confident that he will play a major role and be the inspiration behind our continued success.
