At the age of just 26, NRL star Troy Dargan perished in a terrifying motorcycle accident on Christmas Eve.

Tragic events occurred while the halfback, who played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and signed with the Canberra Raiders prior to the 2024 season, was on vacation in the Cook Islands with his family.

On Christmas Day, his management posted a social media confirmation of the tragic news.

They said: “On behalf of the Dargan family, it is with a heavy heart that we share the news of TJ’s tragic passing overnight.

NRL side Parramatta Eels, where Dargan spent time as a junior, said they were ‘deeply saddened’ by the new. They added: “Troy was an Eels junior who had a great connection to many of our junior players and staff.”

The family of footy star Troy Dargan have made a plea for help bringing him home as NRL clubs pay tribute to the 26-year-old after he died in a motorcycle accident while holidaying in the Cook Islands.

Dargan, 26, played two NRL matches for the Rabbitohs in 2020 and also represented the Cook Islands twice in 2019.

He passed away in the South Pacific island nation on Christmas Eve, with the tragic news first announced by his management, Aria Sports Group.

The former playmaker for the Australian Schoolboys began his career with Parramatta and later transferred to the Broncos, where he played in the Queensland Cup for two seasons prior to joining Souths.

Dargan played six games for Blacktown Workers while in the Sea Eagles system in 2023.

To Troy “Tj” Dargan’s dearest family, friends, and supporters. It hurts me so much to write this on behalf of my dear sister-in-law Wendy and her husband Troy Dargan,” the post says.

‘Our Family is trying to bring his body back to Sydney, Australia. With him passing just before Christmas and the suddenness of it all, I am trying to help ease the financial costs in any way that I can and kindly ask people to donate to this cause.

‘Due to the timing of it all, the expenses are far greater than we could’ve imagined.

You could not have asked for a more devoted and kind son, brother, cousin, nephew, or friend than he was.

Even in the face of difficulty, TJ persevered. He was so amazing because he pushed himself to the absolute limit.

“It is one of the most terrible things any of us could go through right now, and there are no words that can ever fully express how deeply hurt we are as a family.”

The post ends by stating that any additional money raised will be used for Dargan’s funeral.

On Boxing Day, NRL clubs honored the halfback and five-eighth.

‘On behalf of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles, our club extends its deepest condolences to Troy’s family,’ Sea Eagles chief executive Tony Mestrov said.

‘Troy was a very well respected and popular member of the playing squad over the past two seasons.

‘He was a man of great integrity and values who worked very hard to not only be a better player but just as importantly a kind and genuine man.

‘Troy was always smiling, even when injuries tested his resilience.

‘Troy also did some great work in the community where he made many friends through his positive energy.

‘He will be sadly missed by everyone at the Sea Eagles.’

Dargan had joined the Raiders this pre-season and made an immediate impact on the rest of the playing group.

‘This is a very sad time for Troy’s family and friends, and we will be respecting their privacy and offering support where we can to help them at this tough time,’ Raiders chief executive Don Furner said.

Troy was only twenty-six years old, and we were excited about the prospect of him being able to continue his NRL career with our club.

“We will be providing support to any of Troy’s current teammates who require it during this difficult time. The news is also very sad for them.”

‘The Rabbitohs and the entire rugby league community are mourning the passing of former player Troy Dargan,’ the statement from South Sydney said, adding a link to the GoFundMe page.

The Brisbane Broncos expressed their “deep sadness” upon learning of Dargan’s passing.

Our hearts go out to his friends, family, and loved ones. Continually a member of the Broncos organization, the team posted on social media.
