Metta Sandiford-Artest, a former Los Angeles Lakers champion who some fans may recognize more as Metta World Peace, has high hopes for Victor Wembanyama, a rookie for the San Antonio Spurs.
The 2010 NBA champion believes that Wembanyama is the closest thing that modern-day fans will ever see to NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, and he even predicts that the 19-year-old will eventually score 101 points in a game.
With 100 points in a 1962 NBA game, Chamberlain holds the record for most points scored in a game.
Wembanyama is playing well in his Spurs rookie campaign. He’s averaging a respectable 18.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.1 blocks per game, despite some growing pains. In the final category, he is the league leader.
The rookie scored 38 points against the Phoenix Suns earlier in the season on 15 of 26 field goals and 3 of 6 three-pointers. That was arguably the best scoring effort he has ever had in his NBA career.
Though he appears to have a lengthy career ahead of him, he still has a ways to go before he flirts with Chamberlain’s scoring record.
He’s probably more concerned with making baby steps forward and getting the Spurs closer to contention for the time being. San Antonio has the worst record in the Western Conference with a 5-27 record this year.
Although Sandiford-Artest’s prediction may cause some controversy, his successful NBA career makes him more than qualified to voice his thoughts. The journeyman not only won a championship with the Lakers but also received numerous defensive honors, one All-Star selection, and one nomination to the All-NBA team during his tenure in the league.
With players like Wembanyama of the Spurs and Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder leading the way, the current NBA rookie class is quite exciting. The league is currently full of young talent, which suggests that the sport’s future is in capable hands.
Wembanyama may break some records along the way, but only time will tell if he turns into an all-time great.
