Lion’s Welcomes 5 Agent CB To Replace Multi-Million Dollar CB After Domestic Assault Arrest Warrant…

Lions say they didn't know Cam Sutton is wanted by police in Florida - mlive.com

It was inevitable based on the allegation, and it happened quickly. After authorities in Florida issued an arrest warrant for Cameron Sutton on Wednesday, the Detroit Lions released the veteran cornerback on Thursday.

A segment of Lions’ fans wanted Sutton gone after his rough first season with the team in 2023. He was lined up to get a chance to redeem himself next season, in a lower-pressure role after the addition of Carlton Davis. But the severity of his alleged off the field transgression changed everything very quickly.

For better or worse, the Lions now have a prominent spot open on their cornerback depth chart. Brad Holmes made a concerted effort to address the biggest weakness on the roster right away this offseason, trading for Davis and signing Amik Robertson before Day 2 of free agency was over. The door was still open to add someone though, among remaining free agents or the draft, and now there’s some measure of added urgency to that idea with Sutton gone.

Drafting a cornerback may still happen, perhaps early in next month’s proceedings. But the Lions should be looking for a veteran to add, and these five make a lot of sense.

Jackson is coming off a rough 2023 season with the New York Giants, as he switched roles during the season (moving from the slot to outside) and his PFF grades suffered (48.6 overall, 45.9 coverage grade). He has also missed at least three games in five straight seasons.

But before last season, Jackson had two nice seasons for the Giants. If you then throw out 2020 as a small sample, since he only played three games, he has posted an overall PFF grade of 70 or better in each of his other five seasons

Jackson has mostly played on the outside, but he can play in the slot too and the Lions value that versatility. He also has return game ability, which enhances his value. Having played in the Giants’ blitz-heavy scheme should do him some favors with the Lions too.

Detroit Lions fire multi-million dollar cornerback Cameron Sutton after domestic assault arrest warrant granted

The Detroit Lions have released cornerback Cameron Sutton this week after reports have emerged of a domestic battery arrest warrant.

It was confirmed by the Hillsborough County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office, who announced that Sutton was wanted for alleged domestic battery by strangulation.

“We became aware of the ongoing legal situation involving Cam Sutton,” the Lions said in a statement.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and will not have further comment at this time.”

The Lions cut ties with the CB yesterday after Sutton had recently signed a 3-year deal worth $33 million.

He started all 17 regular season games, and three post season matches last season.

He spent the first six years in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Patently unlikely free agent target proposed for Lions to replace Josh Reynolds

Even before his free agent visit to wrap up the second week of free agency, the idea wide receiver Josh Reynolds will not be back with the Detroit Lions is not fresh or revolutionary. It’s not out of the question they’ll look to sign a free agent to replace him, since re-signing Donovan Peoples-Jones isn’t a move that says they’re done adding at the position.

The notion of the Lions taking a wide receiver early in April’s draft is gaining steam the more time goes on.

But free agency can still bear good fruit right now, as players who have lingered available find homes. But recent developments with Cameron Sutton, which led to his release, may push cornerback to the top of the free agency agenda for the Lions.

Still, the idea of adding a piece to a good offense isn’t going to totally go away.

Incredibly unlikely free agent target proposed for Lions to replace Josh Reynolds

Christian D’Andrea of USA TODAY’s For The Win has a new list suggesting landing spots for 11 remaining free agents, the top-11 remaining from the site’s top-101 2024 free agents to be exact. The Lions easily land on that type of radar, since they haven’t spent that much money in free agency. But the player for them, No. 6 on the list of 11, is a little too far out in left field.

Beckham had a visit to the Miami Dolphins this week that reportedly went well. The New York Jets were in the market for a receiver with some rumored interest in Beckham, but they’ve since signed former Charger Mike Williams. Other than that, it’s been fairly quiet.

Beckham still has stretches where he’s very good, but it’s very fleeting as he’s crossed into his 30s and injuries have been a thing. His name is far greater than his game at this point, but he most surely sees himself as more than a replacement for someone like Reynolds.

Beckham won’t be getting the same kind of one-year deal he got from the Ravens last offseason ($15 million) this offseason. But regardless of the price point, the fit is strained with the Lions and he’s not likely on their radar at all.
