PHILADELPHIA –Murphy Sean will miss at least a couple of weeks while recovering from a left oblique strain he sustained while taking a swing in the seventh inning of the Braves’ 9-3 Opening Day win over the Phillies on Friday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

“We’ll get him checked out tomorrow and see what the images say,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the game. “I hate it for him. He had a really nice end to his spring and he was really feeling good, and it was just one of those freak things that happen in baseball.”
Travis d’Arnaud will serve as Atlanta’s primary catcher in Murphy’s absence. d’Arnaud was named an All-Star in 2022, while Murphy was one of the Braves’ representatives at last season’s All-Star Game.
Chadwick Tromp is expected to be promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett to take Murphy’s roster spot and serve as d’Arnaud’s backup.
Murphy, 29, will undergo further imaging to determine the severity of the injury but is expected to be placed on the injured list. He was replaced by veteran Travis d’Arnaud, who was an All-Star in 2022.

He left trailing 2-0, but after the Braves tied it 2-2 in the seventh, they exploded for seven more runs in the eighth. Most of the damage was done off Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado, who gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning.
After posting 139 RBIs last season, first baseman Matt Olson picked up where he left off, driving in his first three of 2024 with a bases-loaded double in the decisive inning. Friday was his 30th birthday.
