Bills trading Stefon Diggs to Texans: Grading blockbuster deal for disgruntled Pro Bowl receiver - CBSSports.com

Buffalo, we have a problem. Buffalo Bills‘ Stefon Diggs is headed to the Houston Texans in a blockbuster trade. ESPN reports the matter went down on Wednesday (April 3), with the Bills swapping the 4-time Pro Bowler for draft compensation.

Buffalo will receive a 2025 second-round pick via the Minnesota Vikings as a part of the trade. Houston will receive the electric athlete, a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The trade arrives just a day after Stefon Diggs got into his usual antics on social media.

On Tuesday (April 2), a fan said Diggs’ field output wasn’t essential to Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s success. Stefon saw the comment and bluntly asked, “You sure?” While it is unknown whether the xweet factored into the trade, it does add finality to a saga that may have overstayed its welcome. Since joining the Bills, Stefon Diggs has had some drama attached to him.\

One of the most notable moments arrived after the team’s January 2023 playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The loss was a blow as the WNY squad lost 27-10. Diggs blew up at Allen on the sideline as the game ended, seemingly screaming at his quarterback. The former Maryland athlete then stormed out of Highmark Stadium, refusing to speak to the media.

After the media asked him about the situation, Coach Sean McDermott sided with Diggs. He said he didn’t want someone on his team who “didn’t hurt” after a huge loss. “It hurts, and I wouldn’t want a guy who doesn’t hurt,” McDermott said.

Diggs later took to social media the following day to answer for his sideline outburst. He claimed that he was upset that they lost and the way they lost. “Want me to be okay with losing? Nah. Want me to be okay with our level of play when it’s not up to the standard? Nah. It’s easy to criticize my reaction more than the result,” he typed.

The tension trickled into the offseason that year. Diggs opted not to attend Buffalo’s June mandatory minicamp, and Coach McDermott expressed that he was “very concerned” about Stefon’s absence at the time. Allen then offered his opinion on what was happening with his teammate. He blamed himself, stating that he could do better to live up to his potential.

“There’s things that I could do better to help out with this process and try to get him back here and be the Buffalo Bill that he’s meant to be,” Allen said.

Fast-forward, and Diggs is gone. Along withc the Buffalo Bills lost wide receivers Gabe Davis, Deonte Harty, and Trent Sherfield—all of whom caught passes for the Bills last season, per ESPN. Buffalo has attempted to shore up its WR holes with the additions of Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins. The Bills will need to address more of their issues in the NFL Draft because it’s looking like the AFC East squad got fleeced.

Meanwhile, the Texans have soared to the top of the AFC South with their off-season additions. Houston has added RB Joe Mixon, DE Denico Autry, LB Neville Hewitt, CB Myles Bryant, CB CJ Henderson, DE Derek Barnett and so much more. Adding Stefon Diggs just gave star rookie QB CJ Stroud the boost he needed.

Stefon Diggs is on the move.

The four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver has been traded by the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Bills will reportedly receive the Vikings’ 2025 second-round pick from the Texans, who acquired that pick from Minnesota in a trade last month. The Texans will get back Diggs, plus a 2024 sixth-round pick and 2025 fifth-round pick.

ggs, 30, has posted six straight 1,000-yard seasons. He had at least eight touchdowns in all four of his seasons with the Bills, who acquired him from the Vikings in 2020 for the first-round pick that became All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

Over nine seasons since being drafted in the fifth round by the Vikings in 2015, Diggs has racked up 810 receptions, 9,995 receiving yards and 67 touchdowns.

Now, Diggs will join a blossoming Texans team led by rising second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year led Houston to a division title and playoff win last season while finishing eighth in MVP voting.

The Texans are clearly loading up this offseason with Stroud still on his rookie-scale contract for three more seasons (plus his fifth-year option). General manager Nick Caserio traded for former Bengals running back Joe Mixon and added to the defense with free agents Danielle Hunter, Denico Autry and Azeez Al-Shaair.

While Diggs’ production dipped in the second half of last season, he’ll now enter a suddenly ideal situation. Young wideouts Nico Collins and Tank Dell emerged with Stroud in 2023. Plus, the Texans have a pair of dependable veterans with Robert Woods and tight end Dalton Schultz.

As for the Bills, they are left with a barren group of weapons for Josh Allen after cap constraints forced them to move on from key contributors this offseason. Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins currently project as Buffalo’s top receiver options, but second-year tight end Dalton Kincaid figures to play an even larger role next season.

The Bills hold the No. 28 overall pick in the upcoming draft, while the Texans won’t pick until No. 42 due to the aforementioned trade with the Vikings.

Five wide receivers caught passes for the Bills in 2023. Four of them are now on other teams.

Stefon Diggs led the Bills with 107 catches, 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was traded to the Texans today.

Gabriel Davis was the Bills’ No. 2 wide receiver in 2023, catching 45 passes for 746 yards and seven touchdowns. He signed with the Jaguars at the start of free agency.

Khalil Shakir, who was the Bills’ No. 3 wide receiver in 2023, is the only wide receiver from last year’s roster who remains. Along with free agent signing Curtis Samuel and potentially a rookie draft pick, Shakir will likely be a starter in Buffalo this season.

Deonte Harty and Trent Sherfield were backups who were the only other wide receivers to catch passes from the Bills last year. The Bills cut Harty in March, while Sherfield left for the Vikings in free agency.

Justin Shorter, a 2023 fifth-round draft pick who spent his rookie season on injured reserve, could be a contributor on the Bills this season. And Mack Hollins, who played for the Falcons last year, signed a free agent contract with the Bills last month. Shakir, Samuel, Shorter, Hollins and a rookie would likely be the five wide receivers the Bills would keep this season, as they hope to re-shape their offense with pass catchers who can take advantage of Josh Allen’s talents.
