The Bears are starting to feel more like an Olympic team these days. Marquise Goodwin, a former London Olympian who is now an NFL wide receiver, was not selected for the U.S. long jump team three years ago, but Bears coaches supported her attempt to make the Tokyo roster. A new Bears administration seems to be just as committed to the Olympic ideals. Goodwin was exempt from missing any training camp time, but it appears that one of the Bears’ recent signings will be granted a few excused absences for the Olympics.

Jonathan Owens, a sixth-year safety best known as the husband of gymnastics icon Simone Biles, will be given some time to attend Paris to support his wife. Biles said (via USA Today’s Nancy Armour) the Bears intend to allow the veteran safety “a couple days off” during training camp to watch her compete. Biles, who regularly attended Texans and Packers games to support Owens, is due to compete in her third Games from July 28-August 1. Owens signed a two-year, $3.8MM deal with the Bears this offseason. Although the former Houston and Green Bay cog worked as a starter over the past two seasons, he looks set to operate as a backup behind Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker in his first Chicago season.

C.J. Stroud tops Josh Allen as a more clutch quarterback

C.J. Stroud is loved by us. In the NFL, the young quarterback has shown himself to be an incredible talent. Many accolades, countless instances of exceeding expectations, and assistance in turning around the Houston Texans in just one season. He really is amazing. He’s been talked about as one of the top 10 quarterbacks in recent times. He is ranked as high as five by some.

Yet, some are greatly overvaluing him. To be clear, we don’t think it’s a bad thing to be high on Stroud, we do think some people are putting too much weight on his shoulders so soon. CBS Sport’s Douglas Clawson compiled his list of the 10 most clutch quarterbacks in the NFL according to a metric he created.

On this list, he had Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers at number 10, the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson a nine, and the New York Giants’ Daniel Jones at eight. Seven saw Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, while six and five had Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys and Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions respectively. Fourth was Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, and Jalen Hurts was third, hailing from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Second, of course, was our very own Stroud while Patrick Mahomes represented the Kansas City Chiefs.

Clawson now raises some valid points. He does, and there is no disputing the veracity of his claims. However, the clutch is more than just a couple of well-timed throws. It’s about using a few critical plays to overcome an entire team’s obstacles. That’s how clutch Mahomes is. That’s how clutch Tom Brady was. That’s how clutch Joe Montana was.

We don’t know if Stroud is that type of clutch. He’s certainly not one who whilst when the heat is on, that’s for sure, but until he starts to develop a reputation as being a guy who comes through in big moments, we can’t put him as high as number two when he only has on season of work to judge him on. Even Cam Newton had a good season, but that doesn’t mean he was clutch.

Before Stroud surpasses players like Allen and Burrow, he needs to put in more effort and win some major honors.
