NFL Report; Why David Montgomery American football Running back for Detroit Lions will miss the game against Buffalo Bills
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery appears to have dodged an injury bullet.
Montgomery was taken back to the locker room with his shoulder pads off Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis in Week 12 of the 2024 NFL season and was listed as questionable to return with a shoulder injury.
The power back didn’t come back into the game after the injury, with Jahmyr Gibbs helping carry the load for the rest of the way with a little help from Craig Reynolds, but in the locker room after the win, Montgomery said he should be good to go for Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game vs. the Chicago Bears.
Montgomery was having himself another big day for the Lions, with a touchdown and 37 yards rushing to go along with three catches for 36 yards through the air when he took himself out of the game with some discomfort.
The powerful running back picked up a big chunk on a screen pass and lowered his shoulder to truck through a tackle before eventually going down. The injury wasn’t obvious at the time, but after the play, Gibbs came in for the remainder of the drive and finished it off with a touchdown.
The Lions announced in the fourth quarter that Montgomery was questionable to return with a shoulder injury, while return man and wide receiver Kalif Raymond was ruled out with a foot injury.
After missing one drive, Montgomery returned to the sideline with his jersey, pads and helmet back on, but did not play another snap.
The Lions play again in just four days Thursday on Thanksgiving Day against the Chicago Bears.
Montgomery is a huge part of the Lions’ dominant offense as the tone-setting thumper that is a perfect compliment to Gibbs’ electric speed. Montgomery entered Sunday’s game vs. the Colts with 595 yards rushing on 137 carries to go along with 10 touchdowns along with 205 yards through the air.
The Lions did get a little good news amid the rash of injuries they suffered in the second half. Left tackle Taylor Decker was taken into the medical tent for an evaluation after getting awkwardly crunched up, but returned after missing a few snaps. He said in the locker room after the game he should be okay to suit up against the Bears this week.
